Guthery's passion for the sport runs deep, as he follows in the footsteps of his brother, who was the original Overwatch captain and helped lay the foundation for the program. Under the guidance of Geography and Government teacher Brandon Thomas, the Booker T. Washington esports team has grown from a modest eight-player roster to a powerhouse of 95 to 100 players.
The team's success is nothing short of remarkable. "Every single season, Booker T. has had at least one team finish in the top 5 of the state," Thomas proudly states. This achievement is all the more impressive considering the program was built from the ground up, with Thomas initially relying on his own personal equipment to help the students hone their skills.
This investment in equipment and resources has been a game-changer for the program. "This year, I decided that if we're going to finish in the top five, I'm ready to start finishing in the top one," Thomas declares, reflecting the team's unwavering ambition and drive to excel.
For students like Parker Barnard, the opportunity to be a team captain has been a transformative experience. "It's nice. I really enjoy working with everyone and being a part of it," he shares, highlighting the sense of belonging and camaraderie that the program fosters.
Thomas emphasizes the importance of this inclusive environment, noting that esports can serve as a "landing spot for some students who might not feel like they have a spot." By providing a welcoming and supportive community, the program has become a game-changer for many students, helping them find their place and forge lasting friendships.
Thomas' vision for the team extends beyond the confines of the high school. "My hope for this team is that, above all else, they love and support each other. Whether it's win or lose, I want them to know that they will always be family and a team because they're some of the first people who started this program. They're setting a legacy for future Booker T. teammates that you've not just Hive esports, you're Hive family."
As the Booker T. Washington esports team continues to make waves, their story serves as a testament to the transformative power of competitive gaming. By fostering a culture of camaraderie, inclusivity, and academic excellence, this high school program is paving the way for a new generation of digital athletes to thrive and reach their full potential.
