Esports: The Thrilling Rise of High School Gaming Dynasties
In the heart of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a high school is redefining the boundaries of competitive gaming. Booker T. Washington High School has emerged as a powerhouse in the world of esports, where students are honing their skills and forging unbreakable bonds as they compete against rival schools. This story delves into the remarkable journey of this trailblazing program, uncovering the transformative impact it has had on the lives of its student-athletes.

Unlocking the Potential of the Digital Generation

Esports: A Competitive Frontier for High School Students

The world of esports is rapidly expanding, with an estimated 190 million Americans now engaging in competitive video gaming. Booker T. Washington High School has embraced this trend, establishing a thriving esports program that is redefining the high school sports landscape. "Esports is a competitive video gaming where one school goes against another, and whoever wins just wins," explains Beau Guthery, the school's esports captain.

Guthery's passion for the sport runs deep, as he follows in the footsteps of his brother, who was the original Overwatch captain and helped lay the foundation for the program. Under the guidance of Geography and Government teacher Brandon Thomas, the Booker T. Washington esports team has grown from a modest eight-player roster to a powerhouse of 95 to 100 players.

The team's success is nothing short of remarkable. "Every single season, Booker T. has had at least one team finish in the top 5 of the state," Thomas proudly states. This achievement is all the more impressive considering the program was built from the ground up, with Thomas initially relying on his own personal equipment to help the students hone their skills.

Leveling the Playing Field: Securing Funding and Equipment

Determined to take the team to new heights, Thomas sought out a grant through the Booker T. Foundation. His efforts paid off, as the school was awarded a full scholarship that enabled the creation of a state-of-the-art esports lab. "We have five new computer gaming stations, complete with a full gaming PC, monitor, and keyboard mouse. I also got an Xbox for the kids who don't use PCs," Thomas explains, outlining the impressive setup that now supports the team's training and competition.

This investment in equipment and resources has been a game-changer for the program. "This year, I decided that if we're going to finish in the top five, I'm ready to start finishing in the top one," Thomas declares, reflecting the team's unwavering ambition and drive to excel.

Fostering Camaraderie and Inclusivity

The Booker T. Washington esports team is more than just a collection of skilled gamers; it's a tight-knit community where students from diverse backgrounds come together. "Any student from any background can join esports, and their love of the game will bring them together," Thomas observes. "So, I have a lot of students who don't have many commonalities, but they find some of their best friends here because they can bond."

For students like Parker Barnard, the opportunity to be a team captain has been a transformative experience. "It's nice. I really enjoy working with everyone and being a part of it," he shares, highlighting the sense of belonging and camaraderie that the program fosters.

Thomas emphasizes the importance of this inclusive environment, noting that esports can serve as a "landing spot for some students who might not feel like they have a spot." By providing a welcoming and supportive community, the program has become a game-changer for many students, helping them find their place and forge lasting friendships.

Paving the Way for Future Opportunities

The Booker T. Washington esports program is not just about the thrill of competition; it also offers students a pathway to higher education. With over 170 colleges and universities now offering esports scholarships, the program has the potential to open doors for students seeking to further their academic and gaming pursuits.

Thomas' vision for the team extends beyond the confines of the high school. "My hope for this team is that, above all else, they love and support each other. Whether it's win or lose, I want them to know that they will always be family and a team because they're some of the first people who started this program. They're setting a legacy for future Booker T. teammates that you've not just Hive esports, you're Hive family."

As the Booker T. Washington esports team continues to make waves, their story serves as a testament to the transformative power of competitive gaming. By fostering a culture of camaraderie, inclusivity, and academic excellence, this high school program is paving the way for a new generation of digital athletes to thrive and reach their full potential.
